Photo (lightly retouched) of a 19th century brass plate I bought off eBay. It's used for decorating leather book covers. I believe the plate was made for use in blindstamping onto the cover, rather than for goldstamping but I could be wrong. I wish I knew who the designer or engraver was but I don't. (Revised 21 Apr. 2006; border altered for tiling on desktop)
You can! I bought it off eBay and it wasn't that expensive either, $15 or so. The trick is finding someone with a blocking press because the metal block is so large it's hard to apply enough pressure with a regular press to get the image to show up.
